Values & Missions

Sustainability is at the heart of MamGu Welshcakes. For us it’s not just about cake, it’s about the people living and working in our community and their environment. MamGu’s has changed over time, but our values have remained the same.

Protecting People

We are proud of the fact that we have offered year-round employment for over 15 bakers, creators and coffee makers in the St David’s peninsular. We offer flexible work hours for parents and students, competitive salaries and of course, free welshcakes. We strive to tackle the ongoing problem of net-migration of young people in coastal communities by offering apprenticeships as well as vocational courses for staff; these have included project leadership, NVQ Accountancy, and HACCP training.

Conserving Coastal Culture

The welshcake is a cultural icon here in Wales, it’s brought people together since the 19th century, representing a sense of belonging and unity of Wales’s diverse communities. Conserving this cultural identity Is important to us and we do this in two ways;

  • Through Community - We can learn a lot about our heritage by the simple bite of a cake. We regularly offer welshcake making classes with local schools and community groups such as the WI and Girl Guides. We also regularly fundraise through our cakes for local and national charities as well as operating a “pay it forward” cake scheme for emergency services across Wales.
  • Through Creativity - We used our café space in Solva to platform creative talent in our community. We held sold out comedy nights as well curating Solva’s first Dylan Thomas day fringe event with National Theatre Wales. Our venue has held community clothes swap events, community supper clubs and invited local small businesses to trade alongside us in Christmas markets. Now our flag ship coffee shop has moved to St Davids Cathedral we plan to increase these events, making use of the larger space we now have within the community.

The Future is Now

We have seen first-hand the amount of packaging, material, food, energy and so much more that goes to waste at a business such as ours. We are now taking proactive steps towards improving our environmental sustainability practices, working towards helping Wales and the world transition to a net carbon future by 2050.

Have you ever heard of a wasted welshcake? No, neither have we because we turn every wonky, crumbly, and misshaped Welsh cake into something new, like a tiffin, welshcake bomb, dessert and ice-cream. The UK is the 3rd largest producer of carbon from food waste in the world, so when you visit our café certain meals have options to reduce food waste such as salad and toast.  A circular economy is definitely a healthier economy.

All of our welshcake packaging is fully recyclable and where possible we source our ingredients locally. In 2022 we awarded Silver "Plastic Free Business Champion" by Surfers Against Sewage. This is down to our visions and actions as listed above, ditching single use plastics and working on real solutions to deal with the plastic pollution crisis our world faces.

We also offer ‘Cycle to Work’ schemes and our ‘welshcakeries’ are solar powered.
