Roses are Red, Violets are Blue,
Wales is the land of lovers
But there's a lot of heartache I tell you.
It’s safe to say that February 14th is a day in our calendars that has a firm place in our hearts…(or not). But did you know that here in Wales we have our very own day of love; Dydd Santes Dwynwen/ Saint Dwynwen's Day, celebrated every year on January the 25th!
Who is St Dwynwen?
Dwynwen; pronounced 'dooIN-wen', is the Welsh Patron Saint of love! However, Dwynwen's story is a far cry away from our red rose hallmark celebration we see today, in fact Saint Dwynwen was very unlucky in love. It is said that Dwynwen fell madly in love with local lad Maelon Dafodrill, but in true folklore rom-com fashion, her father, King Brychan Brycheiniog’s forbade his daughter’s love for Maelon and prearranged her to marry a Prince from away. Dwynwen, being utterly devastated, (rightly so) ran away into a nearby forest and prayed to the gods to aid her healing from heartbreak. Angels visited Dwynwen, giving her a potion to ease her heartache (we prefer a glass of pinot!) & granted three wishes to which she chose the following.
-
To turn Maelon into ice.
-
To never ever marry.
-
That the gods help lovers be true and honest to themselves.
As a gesture of appreciation to the gods, Dwynwen fled to Anglesey away from the seduction of local lads and joined a local nunnery (as you do) where she lived the last of her days, and though Dwynwen froze the slush puppy out of her ex-lover she was still named Wales’s Patron Saint of Love.
St Dwynwens day isn’t just for loved-up couples, it’s encouraged to be celebrated with family, friends, strangers, and furballs alike. So why not celebrate with us this Wednesday 25th with an Afternoon Tea for (two or four) at our Solva Cafe, or take up our current online offer of free delivery on all online orders this January and share love through our Caru Ti Box!
