Becky and Thea met in 2010 in the smallest city in Wales – St Davids. We had both come back from travelling the globe and started working in a small but mighty establishment called Whitesands Cafe. It was the beginning of a lovely friendship.
After taking a trip to Holland for our joint birthday we fell in love with the Dutch attitude to life. We noticed that the Dutch were a very patriotic nation who are very proud of their routes, yet everything had a modern vibrancy, something they felt was lacking back home. Whilst sat drinking a cup of tea and chatting about how they could bring some of this modern vibrancy back home – we decided to teach ourselves to make welshcakes!
About 700 traditional welshcakes later we cracked it, but that wasn’t enough. we started playing with other flavours too and so, in 2016, MamGu Welshcakes was born #ProperLush…
Starting off with a gazebo and a griddle, we tested our idea at a local Christmas market, after selling out on the first day we realized we were on to something. We started supplying local delicatessens and cafes with our welshcakes and doing more festivals. Before we knew it, we had out grown the gazebo, so with some help from our talented and creative families, we converted a horsebox, which enabled us to take our welshcakes further afield.
In 2018 we took the leap, quit our jobs and with the help of our wonderful families again, opened MamGu Welshcakes Coffee Shop. Everything from the bench seating to the counter has been painstakingly upcycled to create our vision; a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. This, paired with homemade welsh food and drink leads to what we’re all about.
Our mission is simple, to support local food producers, educate customers in a modern environment about welsh food, culture and of course, welshcakes.
