Sustainability at MamGu's

Here at MamGu Welshcakes, we live and breath welsh cakes. We LOVE those flat, sweet, scone like cakes! However, environmental issues are just as close to our hearts. We think it is important, more so now than ever, that all businesses should be trying harder with their efforts to be environmentally friendly and as sustainable as possible.

We have seen it first hand the amount of packaging
, material, food, energy and so much more that goes to waste at a business such as ours. We are now taking pro-active steps towards improving our sustainability, working towards helping Wales and the world transition to a low carbon future.

What are we doing to help?

Packaging:

  • All of our welsh cake packaging is either home compostable, or biodegradable. We do not sell any product in non recyclable packaging.
  • If you bring in a reusable box to our cafe we will give you a free welsh cake!
  • Our take away boxes and cups are completely plastic free and from sustainable sources. We get recyclable cups where possible but always encourage you to bring a reusable cup in exchange for a free welsh cake!
At our cafe:
  • All of our drinks are sourced from Wales and served in glass or tin. We have a strict no plastic bottle policy.
  • We have full recycling facilities at the cafe for food, glass and recyclable materials for both public and business use.
  • When ordering your food certain foods have options to reduce food waste such as salad and toast. (The UK is the 3rd largest producer of carbon from food waste in the world!)
  • Our broken welsh cakes from the bakery get made into delicious cakes for our cafe.
  • We have removed the use of most single use plastics in our kitchen and replaced it with reusable tubs etc.
  • Milk is delivered in glass bottles from our our local dairy farm, The Mount Farm, in Solva.
At our bakery:
  • We have removed the use of most single use plastics in our kitchen and replaced it with reusable tubs etc.
  • Solar panels have been installed.
  • Full recycling facilities for food, and recyclable materials.

Thanks to the recent hard work of our cafe manager Laura, we are now extremely proud to be crowned by Surfers Against Sewage as a "Plastic Free Business Champion". This is down to our visions and actions as listed above, ditching single use plastics and working on real solutions to deal with the plastic pollution crisis our world faces.
