How to Heat Welsh Cakes: The Best Ways to Warm & Reheat Welsh Cakes at Home

How to Reheat Welsh Cakes Without Drying Them Out

If you've ever wondered how to heat Welsh cakes, you've come to the right place. While Welsh cakes are delicious straight from the packet, we firmly believe they always taste even better warm.

The very best Welsh cakes are eaten fresh off the griddle while they're still gently warm. That's exactly how we serve them in our St Davids and Saundersfoot Cafes. The good news? With a little care, you can reheat Welsh cakes at home and enjoy almost the same freshly baked experience!

The secret is simple - you want your Welsh cakes warm, not hot. Overheating them can dry them out, so a gentle heat is always best.

Keep scrolling to find the top five ways you can warm a Welsh Cake at home.

1. Warm Welsh Cakes on a Traditional Bakestone or Griddle (Our Favourite)

This is the authentic way and the method we use every day in our cafés.

Heat your bakestone or griddle on a very low heat, place the Welsh cakes on the surface and turn them every so often until they're gently warmed through. Don't rush them! Slow and steady gives the best results.

2. Reheat Welsh Cakes in a Toaster

A toaster works surprisingly well!

Use a low setting and keep a close eye on them. Pop the toaster up regularly and gently feel the Welsh cake to make sure it's warming rather than toasting and making them crisp.

One important note: we don't recommend using a toaster for decorated Welsh cakes, such as our Lime & Coconut or Pumpkin Spice specials. The icing can melt, toppings may fall off and you could end up with a sticky toaster!

3. Heat Welsh Cakes in a Frying Pan

Don't have a bakestone? A frying pan is the next best thing.

There's no need for butter or oil. Simply place your Welsh cakes into a dry pan over a very low heat, turning them regularly until they're lovely and warm.

4. Warm Welsh Cakes in the Oven

The oven works well if you're heating lots of Welsh cakes at once. Although it isn't our favourite method it does work particularly well for our savoury Welsh cakes range!

Preheat your oven to around 160 - 180°C and warm the Welsh cakes for approximately 5 minutes. Every oven is different, so check them regularly and remove them once they're warmed through and not piping hot - it's very easy to dry them out.

5. Warm Welsh Cakes in an Air Fryer

Can you use an air fryer to warm welsh cakes? Yes you absolutely can!

An air fryer is great way to warm Welsh cakes, especially if yours has a reheat setting. If not, use the lowest temperature possible and warm them for around 5 minutes.

Every air fryer is a little different, so we recommend checking them regularly by opening the drawer to see how they're getting on. You can do this as often as you like without any problems. There's no need to add butter or spray any oil, simply place the Welsh cakes straight into the basket and warm them gently until they're just nicely heated through.

6. Reheat Welsh Cakes in the Microwave

If you're in a hurry, the microwave certainly does the job... and it's definitely the quickest!

Around 10 - 15 seconds is usually enough. Just be aware that microwaving makes Welsh cakes much softer, almost soggy in a way. Some people love the squidgy texture but we're not completely convinced! Give it a try if you're feeling adventurous.

The Best Way to Enjoy Warm Welsh Cakes

Whether you choose a traditional griddle, frying pan, toaster or even the microwave, warming Welsh cakes brings out their buttery flavour and soft texture.

MamGu's top tip - Heat them gently, take your time and enjoy them while they're still warm. Pair them with a cup of tea or coffee, and you've got a proper Welsh treat that's hard to beat.
