2026 Sustainability Statement

Our Sustainability Promise
Supporting people, culture and the Pembrokeshire environment

Sustainability sits at the heart of MamGu Welshcakes. For us, it is about more than cake - it is about supporting the people, culture and environment that shape our community in Pembrokeshire.

While MamGu Welshcakes has evolved over time, our core values remain the same: protecting people, celebrating Welsh culture and reducing our environmental impact.

Protecting People

We are proud to provide year-round employment for more than 30 bakers, creators and coffee makers within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. We offer flexible working hours for parents and students, competitive salaries and opportunities for training and development.

To support local livelihoods and help tackle the net migration of young people from coastal communities, we provide apprenticeships and vocational training for our team. These have included project leadership, NVQ accountancy, environmental awareness and HACCP training, helping our staff build skills and long-term careers within the region.

Conserving Coastal Culture

Welsh cakes are a cultural icon of Wales, bringing people together since the 19th century and symbolising the shared traditions of Welsh communities. Preserving and celebrating this heritage is central to what we do.

We engage with our community through welsh cake master classes with local schools and groups such as the WI and Girl Guides, sharing traditional skills and stories through food. Our coffee shops also regularly support fundraising initiatives for local and national charities. Our chosen charities for 2026 are Farms for City Kids and the Welsh Air Ambulance.

Creativity also plays an important role in our community engagement. Our café spaces have hosted comedy nights, community supper clubs, musicians, clothes swaps and Christmas markets that showcase local small businesses. We also curated Solva’s first Dylan Thomas Day fringe event with National Theatre Wales. With our flagship coffee shop now located at St Davids Cathedral Refectory, we look forward to expanding these events and strengthening our role as a creative hub within the community.

For 2026 we plan to host free Welsh speaking groups, live music events, new parent get togethers and more which will support our community.

Caring for the Environment

As a food business, we recognise the environmental impact associated with packaging, food waste and energy use. We are committed to reducing this impact and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.

Reducing waste is a key priority. Any imperfect Welshcakes are never thrown away - they are repurposed into products such as tiffin, desserts and “Welshcake bombs”, or sold in our coffee shops as bags of “Happy Little Accidents”. We also offer menu options that help reduce food waste, recognising that food waste is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions.

Our packaging is fully recyclable, and we prioritise locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Customers who bring reusable containers or cups are rewarded with a free Welshcake at our coffee shops, encouraging more sustainable habits.

Across our coffee shops and bakery, we have removed most single-use plastics and replaced them with reusable alternatives. Drinks are served in glass or tin, and we operate a strict no plastic bottle policy. Milk is sourced locally from Carningli Dairy Farm in Newport, Pembrokeshire, and from E M Davies’ creamery in Haverfordwest, both delivered in reusable glass bottles.

For locally deliveries and collections from our bakery, we have repurposed mushroom crates from neighbouring shops to carry and deliver orders, rather than using cardboard boxes which will end up most likely being single use and ripped up.

These efforts contributed to MamGu Welshcakes being recognised in 2022 as a Silver “Plastic Free Business Champion” by Surfers Against Sewage, reflecting our commitment to reducing plastic use and tackling pollution.

Looking Ahead

We believe sustainability is a continuous journey. By supporting local people, protecting Welsh culture and reducing our environmental footprint, we aim to ensure that MamGu Welshcakes continues to contribute positively to our community and environment for generations to come.
