MamGu Welshcakes in Japan: Day 1 & 2 – From Wales to Tokyo 🇯🇵✨
After months of planning and preparation, the MamGu adventure in Japan has officially begun! Sam and Liam have touched down in Tokyo, representing Wales with one mission in mind: to bring our much-loved Welsh Cakes to the heart of one of the world’s busiest and most exciting city.
Jet lag didn’t stand a chance - helped along by a little Japanese sake and a couple of local beers - and before long they were out discovering what Tokyo has to offer.
Day 1: Exploring Tokyo
The first day was all about settling in and finding their feet. Tokyo is a city that truly has it all - tradition, modernity, and a buzzing energy that’s hard to put into words. Sam and Liam took time to soak in the atmosphere, explore some of the iconic streets, and of course, stop at a few must-see spots. From the famous Shibuya Crossing to the quiet beauty of historic sites like Edo Castle’s 17th-century guard house, it was the perfect way to begin this whirlwind trip.
Day 2: Sharing the Welsh Cake Tradition
On day two, it was time to get down to business. Sam and Liam spent the day teaching the incredible team at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi - one of Tokyo’s most prestigious department stores — the secrets behind making the perfect Welsh Cake. From mixing the dough to mastering the bake, it was a hands-on session filled with flour, fun, and a lot of passion for sharing a true taste of Wales.
The team at Mitsukoshi rose to the challenge, and by the end of the day, Welsh Cakes were flipping and sizzling on the griddle just like they do back home in Wales.
Tomorrow: The Big Launch
Now, the countdown is on. Tomorrow, the doors of Nihombashi Mitsukoshi will open for their 2025 British Fair, and with them begins the real challenge — baking and selling an incredible 2,000 Welsh cakes every single day! It’s a huge task, but one Sam, Liam and the team are ready to take on with pride and excitement.
A Few Highlights So Far…

And yes, even a stop at a 7-Eleven — because when in Japan, who can resist trying their corner shop delights? (Liam might already be working on that export deal 😉).
From Wales to the World
This trip is about more than just Welsh Cakes. It’s about cultural exchange, sharing Welsh heritage with new audiences, and celebrating how food can connect people across the globe. We’re proud to be here, carrying a little piece of Wales into Tokyo, and can’t wait to see what the coming days bring.
Stay tuned as the griddles heat up and the Welsh Cakes keep coming - Tokyo, MamGu has arrived!
