Day 3 & 4 a the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi British Fair

MamGu's in Japan – Day 3 & 4 🇯🇵🍪✨

After a whirlwind first couple of days exploring Tokyo (and finally shaking off the jet lag!), it was time to get down to business. Days 3 and 4 marked the real start of our journey here in Japan, with the opening of the British Fair at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi – one of the most prestigious department stores in Tokyo.

And what an opening it was!

Day 3 was reserved exclusively for invited guests and VIPs, giving us the chance to showcase MamGu Welshcakes in a more intimate setting. It was a wonderful opportunity to introduce our little taste of Wales to some very special people, and the warm response was both humbling and exciting.

Then came Day 4 – the big public opening. From the moment the doors opened, the crowds started to gather… and they didn’t stop. We were serving Welsh cakes from morning until night with queues stretching further than we ever expected. To say we were overwhelmed by the popularity would be an understatement. It seems that the people of Tokyo have truly embraced Welsh cakes – and seeing the joy on people’s faces as they tried them for the very first time made every second worth it.

Of course, it hasn’t all been easy. The long days, the heat, and the occasional lost-in-translation moment have all kept us on our toes. But those challenges have only made the experience even more memorable. We’ve had so many laughs, incredible conversations (with the help of a few trusty translation apps!), and moments that we’ll never forget.

It’s inspiring to see how food connects people across cultures. Something as simple as a Welsh cake – a recipe rooted in tradition and home – can spark curiosity, conversation, and even long queues on the other side of the world. That’s the magic of sharing what we do.

Queues upon queues… trust us, they went right around the corner!

We couldn’t be prouder to see Wales represented on this international stage, and to witness firsthand just how much love there is for Welsh cakes around the world. 🌍💛
