MamGu’s in Japan – Days 7 & 8: The Grand Finale 🇯🇵🍪🏴
And just like that, our time in Japan has come to an end – but what an incredible adventure it has been!
Our final two days in Tokyo were a whirlwind of baking Welsh Cakes, connecting, and taking in the last of this amazing city. Together with our incredible partners Fumie, Mari, Yukiko, Junko, Yuko and Chie, we baked close to 14,000 Welsh cakes over the course of the week. Seeing so many happy faces discover (or rediscover!) a little taste of Wales in the form of a Welsh Cake so far from home was an experience we’ll never forget.
It wasn’t all work, though – we made time to explore and meet some amazing people!
-
Welsh expats in Tokyo – hearing their stories and seeing their faces light up as they enjoyed Welsh Cakes again was truly special.
-
Welsh Government & British Embassy representatives – We had multiple brilliant opportunity to sit down with dignitaries, share what we do, and discuss the importance of flying the flag for Wales internationally.
-
Japanese culture & food – we ended the trip in style with some unforgettable meals, including a visit to Andy's Shin Hinomoto (if you ever find yourself in Tokyo, put it on your list – it’s a must!).
As we packed up and said our goodbyes, we couldn’t help but feel incredibly grateful - not just for the success of the event, but for the warmth and hospitality of everyone we met. Diolch yn fawr iawn / Arigatō to Fumie for inviting us to Tokyo and to Mari, Yukiko, Junko, Yuko and Chie for all your hard work alongside us making and baking welsh cakes every day.
This trip has been one of MamGu Welshcakes’ biggest adventures yet. It’s hard to imagine how we’ll top it – but knowing us, we’ll find a way!
Until next time, Tokyo. ❤️🇯🇵🤝🏻🏴
